  • Arsenal has been working on the potential transfer of Lyon's Houssem Aouar
  • Lyon may finally let Aouar go in a matter of days
  • The Frenchman insisted that all the transfer link-ups are "fake news"

Arsenal could be just days away from finally moving up a notch in its chase of a longtime target.

Lyon’s Houssem Aouar has long been on the radar of Arsenal, but the English Premier League side has yet to make progress even to this day.

However, all that could change in just a matter of time as Lyon is believed to be in the process of balancing the books to financial losses, and it has led to rumors claiming Aouar could be sacrificed for money.

The Gunners have already reached out to Lyon last week for a potential loan deal for Aouar.

However, the French club is more interested in selling the midfielder for around £21 million ($29 million), The Athletic reported.

As it stands, Arsenal and Lyon have yet to close a deal. Meanwhile, Tottenham is also in the mix.

However, reputable transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Ligue 1 side is likely to give a final verdict on Aouar’s situation “in the coming days.”

Should Lyon decide to let Aouar go, Romano suggested that there’s a huge possibility that the player will be approached by the Gunners once again.

“[Houssem] Aouar is a player they (Arsenal) love,” Romano said on The Arsenal Lounge. “They are still waiting to see what happens with Lyon. He could still be an opportunity for Arsenal and Tottenham, they are both in contact with his agent,”

“So they are still looking at the situation and if Lyon will give the green light in the coming days, he could become an option for Arsenal too."

Aside from Arsenal and Tottenham, an earlier report said Manchester United may also be plotting a transfer swoop for Aouar.

The report noted that Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified the Frenchman as “a good replacement for Paul Pogba,” who has been constantly linked to a move away from Old Trafford.

Aouar’s current contract with Lyon is set to expire in 2023.

The 23-year-old drew the attention of his suitors by being a consistent performer since 2017, but despite being targeted by big-name clubs, Aouar insisted that all of it is just “fake news.”

“Once again, unfortunately, an umpteenth ‘fake news’ story has been released about me on multiple social media accounts,” Aouar said in a statement. “I'm not in the habit of responding to what is said about me...[but I was] sick, I was hospitalized over the weekend. Know that I am a lot better and that I am ready for the future!"

“Thank you to those who have always supported me, in the good times as in the less good times. Allez Lyon.”
