  • Arsenal is set to sign Real Madrid's Martin Odegaard on a permanent deal
  • Odegaard is expected to stay with Arsenal until 2026
  • He has been wanted by the Gunners following his impressive debut loan season

A highly-regarded Arsenal loanee is on the verge of becoming a mainstay at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta sparked a new flame by being able to utilize Martin Odegaard. In 20 matches for the Gunners last season, the Real Madrid loanee was able to leave a good impression, having registered two goals and two assists.

Throughout the summer, Arsenal has been working on keeping Odegaard and is now finally close to completing his permanent transfer, according to reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

“Martin Odegaard has always been Arsenal's priority and now the deal is set to be completed, confirmed!,” Romano tweeted. “Talks at final stages and here-we-go soon! Ødegaard will re-join Arsenal on a permanent deal. The fee to be decided in the next few hours. Contract until June 2026.”

Though it is yet to be known how much Arsenal will be splurging on the 22-year-old’s transfer, The Telegraph’s Sam Dean bared that it could be between £5 million-£8 million ($6.8 million-$11 million).

“The sale of [Joe] Willock to Newcastle provided crucial funds in the pursuit of Odegaard,” Dean wrote. “Arsenal has done plenty of questionable deals over the last few years but they are effectively paying £5m-£8m to replace Willock with Odegaard. Time will tell but that feels like superb business.”

Back in Madrid, Spanish journalist Alvaro Montero revealed that Odegaard’s exit was already bound to happen prior to Arsenal’s move.

According to Montero, there has been no indication thus far that implies Odegaard is and will be a Real Madrid player.

“Real Madrid knows that Arsenal is a huge possibility because economically they have enough for the player,” Montero told Sky Sports. “We have to remember when Carlo Ancelotti was asked about the future of Martin Odegaard, he feels in the same path as the club. He said there are eight midfielders, so players like Isco, Asensio, Sergio Arribas and even Dani Cabellos. It seems they are all before Martin Odegaard.”

“He hasn’t [got] a number,” he added. “If you saw Real Madrid’s website right now, Martin Odegaard has no number. It seems he is going to leave and Arsenal is a huge possibility.”

Gunners boss Arteta, meanwhile, has also been yearning to have Odegaard in his squad for good.

The Spaniard earlier admitted that the club hopes the youngster also feels the same way for Arsenal.

"We’ve tried to make everything that we could to get Martin performing for the team, which I think he’s done, and he’s adapted really well to our way of playing and our football club,” Arteta said of Odegaard in May.

"Hopefully, we have given him the hope and the feeling that this could be a good place for him here."
