With the exceptions of adding fullback Nacho Monreal in 2013, central defender Gabriel in 2015, and Mohamed Elneny in 2016, Arsenal mostly have a history of standing pat ahead of the Jan. 31 transfer deadline. Many would argue that Arsenal will continue the trend of waiting until the summer to make a big signing instead of throwing off team chemistry with a high-profile addition during the season.

But this season might be unique to others. On the heels of arguably the most disappointing Premier League season in Arsene Wenger's 21 seasons in north London, Arsenal might have extra incentive to bolster the roster. Entering Week 10, Arsenal have 16 points and are looking up at Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

However, those that think this term will be different might want to take a look at some of the names that have been recently linked to the club — players with notable deficiencies that should make Arsenal wary of executing a deal.

German newspaper Bild cited Arsenal, along with Manchester United, as clubs showing interest in Borussia Dortmund winger Marco Reus. A partial cruciate ligament tear has sidelined the 28-year-old since May and he won't be able to return until at least March 2018. Dortmund are thought to be looking for any type of compensation for Reus with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

There are plenty of reasons for Arsenal to be cautious about making a transfer move for Reus. The German star's knee may not heal as fast as they anticipate, United or other clubs might drive up Dortmund's asking price if he shows signs of an early recovery and Reus may struggle to comfortably fit the fast-paced style of the Premier League.

Palmeiras youngster Alan Guimaraes is another name that British tabloids have linked to Arsenal. The crafty midfielder reportedly has a €50 million ($58 million; £44.1) release clause and Palmeiras are expected to hold on to him. He also is just 17 years old and isn't even on the club's current roster, making him an enormous longshot to join Arsenal anytime soon.

The Sun reported last week that Arsenal are interested AC Milan striker Andre Silva, a 21-year-old Portuguese striker. While Silva is considered a promising prospect, he has played in just five matches for Milan and on Wednesday came on as a substitute in the 80th minute with Milan leading Chievo Verona, 4-1.

Milan paid Porto £33 million so it may seem farfetched to expect him to join Arsenal anytime soon. Barcelona are also reportedly interested in Silva and have plenty of money to spend after completing the most lucrative transfer move in history with Neymar moving on to Paris Saint-Germain.
