  • RB Leipzig's Dani Olmo wants to return to his home country Spain in the future
  • Barcelona is expected to chase Olmo once again, having pursued the player in the past
  • The midfielder's move to Barca didn't push through due to a series of postponements

Barcelona could have a clearer shot at signing a past prospect, RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo.

The Catalan club had been quiet throughout the January transfer window with manager Ronald Koeman keen on sticking with his mix of youngsters and veterans. However, Barca reportedly had its eyes on Olmo last year and could once again be a frontrunner in landing the Spanish midfielder.

It can be recalled that after five and a half years with Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb , Olmo joined RB Leipzig in the middle of the 2019-20 Bundesliga season. But despite being just in his second season with the German side, the 22-year-old surprisingly hinted at his desire to return to his home country Spain in the future, a scenario that Barcelona is expected to take advantage of.

“I would be lying if I said that it is not my goal to play in my home country [Spain] at some point,” Olmo recently told German outlet Bild.

Having dropped a huge hint, Olmo was then quizzed about his preferred destination between the three big-name Spanish top flight clubs Barca, Real Madrid or La Liga leader Atletico Madrid. However, the youngster bared that he hasn’t actually thought about it yet.

“I am not thinking about that,” he admitted. “I am really focused on [RB] Leipzig.”

As early as now, Barcelona could already be monitoring Olmo’s situation, having advanced in talks for the Leipzig star’s signature in the past, several outlets, including Goal and Everything Barca, reported.

According to Olmo, the Catalans and his representatives were already in discussion for his move to Camp Nou at the time. However, negotiations eventually fell apart after a series of postponements.

"They [Barcelona] spoke to my agents in November [2019] as if they wanted to make the transfer very quickly, but then everything was postponed for one reason or another,” Olmo told Mundo Deportivo in March last year. "And then near the end of January, when they asked me to wait to see, it was already almost done with Leipzig. At that time, I had already signed up. Because I wanted to go to a team that had a project now and in the future for me.”

"Leipzig offered it to me and other teams did not,” he added. “I went to the team that insisted the most and showed the most that they wanted me."

Olmo was quick to make his mark in Leipzig, registering five goals and seven assists in 31 appearances to date.
