KEY POINTS

  • "Battlefield 2042's" player population dipped into the low 900s
  • The game's reception and image continue to be very negative
  • More updates are coming, but the developers have not specified any dates

The track record for “Battlefield 2042” just got much worse after it hit its lowest concurrent player count to date, which is indicative of how poorly the game has been received by the community.

EA’s latest entry in the long-running “Battlefield” series reached a new population low of just 931 online players, according to data recorded in Steam Charts. The downward trend is expected to continue in the following weeks as the overall reception of the game and its image on social media remain overwhelmingly negative.

With over 100,000 reviews for “Battlefield 2042,” it is currently sitting at only a 28% positive rating on Steam, not counting the false-positive reviews that some users had left.

Compared to the other recent games in the series, “Battlefield 2042” has the second-least number of concurrent players next to “Battlefield 4,” although the two games seem to be contending in terms of player population. The latter is very slowly gaining players, while the former is losing them.

Meanwhile, “Battlefield V” has been enjoying a monthly player count of approximately 11,000 players, while “Battlefield 1” still sees over 4,000 players per month.

However, the data on Steam Charts only reflects the player population on Steam itself. This does not include players on consoles and those who bought the game via EA’s own Origin launcher. Regardless, the overall perspective for “Battlefield 2042” remains terribly pessimistic.

This negative view only worsened after the developers announced that the game’s early April update is yet to be released. What remains of the playerbase has been waiting for the update, which promised hundreds of bug fixes, vehicle balancing and attachment behavior changes, but unfortunately, the developers have yet to pin an exact release date.

This April marks the fifth month of “Battlefield 2042’s” decline and content stagnation. There is yet to be any meaningful content drop for the game as its first season continues to get delayed amid the sluggish roll-out of important bug fixes and polish passes.

Despite the negative air around the game, Dice is still working on releasing more content for it. A new map set in the Canadian mountain ranges is reportedly in development alongside three others that are yet to be revealed.
