President Joe Biden described the Supreme Court as "more of an advocacy group" than an "even-handed" arbiter of justice.

The remarks are Biden's most pointed criticisms of the court to date.

Biden was commenting on the court while at a virtual fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt of Delaware. The Democrat serves as an assistant whip in the House.

"I view this off-year election as one of the most important elections that I've been engaged in because a lot can change because the institutions have changed." Biden said. "The Supreme Court is more an advocacy group these days than it is an even handed" court.

Abortion became a political flashpoint after the Supreme Court earlier this year overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling legalizing abortion nationwide.

Democrats across the country and up-and-down the ballot are campaigning and messaging heavily on the issue. Nationwide, Democrats are vowing to reverse strict new abortion laws in conservative-led states and expand reproductive health services throughout the country.

At the time of the ruling, Biden said "the health and life of women in this nation are now at risk."

According to the Pew Research Center, public favorability of the court has also declined post-Roe, with positive views of the court declining sharply

For the first time, Biden said, Americans are concerned "about whether we can keep our democracy."

Earlier this year, Biden successfully nominated and appointed his first Supreme Court justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first black woman on the court. The appointment did not change the 6-3 conservative makeup of the court.
