Second-quarter earnings season heads into full swing next week. The results will provide guidance on how much the global slowdown is affecting U.S. companies.

Investors will hear from a string of multinational corporations starting from July 16.

Companies reporting in the financial sector include big names like Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley.

Other major players set to report second-quarter earnings in the coming week include: Intel, Honeywell, IBM, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Verizon, General Electric, Yahoo, Johnson & Johnson, Abbott Laboratories, Coca-Cola, Yum Brands.

So far, 30 companies in the S&P 500 have reported earnings.

Overall, companies are reporting earnings that are 5.2 percent above expectations. Over the past four quarters on average, actual earnings for the S&P 500 surpassed estimates by 4.8 percent, according to FactSet.

Since the start of the second quarter (March 31), earnings growth rate for companies in the S&P 500 index has declined to 2.1 percent, from 6.5 percent, according to FactSet, led by the energy and financial sectors.

Not only is Bank of America the largest contributor to earnings growth for the financial sector, it is also the largest contributor to earnings growth for the entire S&P 500. Excluding Bank of America, the earnings growth rate for the index would fall to negative 2.6 percent from 2.1 percent. Bank of America is predicted to report earnings per share of 15 cents, compared to a loss of 90 cents recorded in the year-ago period.

It is expected to report FY 2012 second-quarter EPS of 90 cents on revenue of $18.87 billion, compared with a profit of $1.09 a share on revenue of $20.62 billion in the year-ago period. Citigroup is trading around $25.28 a share. So far this year, the stock has lost 3.91 percent.

Tuesday BMO:

Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS) is a global investment banking, securities and investment management firm. The company has a market cap of $47.62 billion. It is expected to report FY 2012 second-quarter EPS of $1.15 on revenue of $6.41 billion, compared with a profit of $1.85 a share on revenue of $7.28 billion in the year-ago period.
