Another American boxer is in critical condition after suffering a severe brain injury during a welterweight match in Chicago on Saturday. Patrick Day, a 27-year-old fighter from Freeport, New York, was taken to the Northwestern Memorial Hospital after being knocked out cold by Charles Conwell on the 10th round.

Day fought on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk's heavyweight debut against Chazz Witherspoon on Saturday. He's the 4th fighter in a span of four months to suffer from debilitating injuries; the rest never recovered, which resulted in their deaths.

Patrick was taken from the ring on a stretcher, and he is in a coma following the emergency surgery. His promoter, Lou DiBella, tweeted that Pat "makes any room he is in a better place," adding that he's "never met anyone who's met [Day] and not liked him."

"Never saw him greet someone without a big smile. Life doesn't seem fair sometimes," added DiBella. British promoter Eddie Hearn also shared his message on the popular social media platform. He said: "Our thoughts and prayers... are with his family right now. Please keep Pat in your thoughts."

Patrick Day is the fourth fighter to have suffered severe brain trauma after a fight. On September 21, Boris Stanchov died on his debut match in the ring at Qazim Devershi, Shkoder, Albania, on the fifth round of the event.

In July, two boxers lost their lives after their fights. On July 25, 23-year-old Argentinian Hugo Alfredo "Dinamita" Santillan lost his life after never recovering from a coma during a match against Eduardo Javier Abreu on July 20.

It was later discovered that he already had a medical ban handed by the German Boxing Federation (BDB). Santillan endured a massive beating on his loss against Artem Harutyunyan a month before his match against Abreu. Orlando Farias, his regular coach, knew about the ban and did not coach him afterward.

On July 19, 28-year-old Russian Maxim Dadashev expired after he collapsed on the ring in the aftermath of his bout against Subriel Matías on the 16th. Dadashev's trainer, Buddy McGirt, stopped the fight after throwing a white towel on the 11th round.

McGirt tried to convince Dadashev on the 10th round to stop the match as he was being hit too much, Maxim just shook his head in protest. Since 1980, 50 boxers have lost their lives days after their contests.

In February 1995, it was determined that about 500 boxers have died in the ring since the Marquess of Queensberry Rules were introduced in 1884.
