  • David Benavidez called out "Canelo" Alvarez after getting the win over Kyrone Davis
  • Benavidez held the WBC super middleweight title on two different occasions
  • Fighting Alvarez will prove to be a tough ask for Benavidez due to the wide skill gap

Former WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez is calling for a shot at Saul “Canelo” Alvarez after stopping Kyrone Davis in the seventh round this past Saturday, November 13.

The 24-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona had the fight of his life in front of his hometown crowd as he repeatedly battered Davis with combinations that forced Davis’ corner to throw in the towel 48 seconds into the seventh round.

After dispatching Davis, Benavidez had this to say about fighting Alvarez.

“It was tough but I have so much condition, I'm going to keep going until he (Davis) eventually stops. I think everybody wants to see me against Canelo. I'll go through anybody; whoever they want me to go through,” confidently remarked Benavidez as quoted by ESPN.

Benavidez, the current No.1-ranked WBC and Ring Magazine super middleweight contender, believes he deserves a title shot as soon as possible after stopping Davis.

While fighting “Canelo” would be a dream come true for Benavidez, he simply is not ready for the caliber of fighter that Alvarez is.

The Mexican employs a highly aggressive style of boxing that is predicated on having solid fundamentals that allow him to move around the ring with ease and cut angles, allowing him to throw shots at a high rate effectively.

As seen in his dustup against Davis, Benavidez has the skill to back up the talk, but it will be hard to see him giving Alvarez a tough time in the ring.

However, he showed a tendency to keep his hands down against Davis, something that can be attributed to Benavidez having a ton of confidence.

That is a careless mistake that Alvarez will repeatedly exploit until Benavidez corrects it midway through the fight or he gets knocked out, whichever comes first.

“Canelo” is coming off a one-sided beating of Caleb Plant last November 6 to become the undisputed super middleweight champion and is currently awaiting his first challenger.

If a fight between Alvarez and Benavidez pushes through, it will not be hard to see the 31-year-old stopping the Phoenix native in under seven rounds, putting a halt to the Mexican-American's 25-fight win streak.

An in-ring meeting against Alvarez will surely make Benavidez a more internationally-recognized name, but taking into account how he fought against Davis, he simply is not ready for the challenge that the undisputed king at 168 pounds will pose.
