After having her request to end her conservatorship denied in June, Britney Spears is now taking a new step in her quest for freedom, requesting permission to get her own lawyer as she seeks to sue her father, Jamie Spears, for Conservatorship Abuse.

Spears made a request to hire her own attorney and announced plans to sue her father, according to CNN.

“I would like to charge my father with conservatorship abuse,” she said by phone. “I want to press charges against my father today. I want an investigation into my dad.”

The announcement that she was going to sue her father came after she was granted the right to get her own lawyer, which came after she told the court how the conservatorship “allowed my dad to ruin my life,” NBC News reports.

After receiving the right to get her own lawyer, Spears took to Instagram and Twitter to share the good news with her fans and thank them for their support—and even included the #FreeBritney that has become synonymous with her fans and the continued quest to let the singer once again make her own decisions.

Spears has been under conservatorship since 2008, which is split into two parts. Her father has control over her estate and financial affairs, while her medical and personal decisions have also been handled elsewhere. Spears stunned fans and others by revealing new details about her conservatorship during her June hearing, where she alleged that she was forced to perform against her will, was forbidden to have more children or marry and take medications she didn’t need.
