KEY POINTS

  • The Anecdote candles sold at Anthropologie may have "higher than usual flames"
  • There have been incidents that led to "minor property damage"
  • Customers with the recalled candles can get a refund

Candles sold exclusively at Anthropologie are being recalled because they may pose fire and laceration risks. The recall affects double wick candles sold in the U.S. and Canada.

The problem with the double wick Anecdote Autumn Glass Candles is they can "achieve higher than usual flames," a recall alert posted on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website noted. Because of this, the candles' glass container may end up breaking apart, therefore posing fire and laceration hazards.

There have been nine incidents of the candles "flaming up, cracking or breaking apart" while being used. They caused minor property damage, though no injuries were reported, the CPSC said.

The recalled candles came in four different scents and colors such as "Fireside Chats" (blue), "Weekend Getaway" (green), "Fall Feels" (orange) and "Sweater Weather" (pink). They all had the words "Anecdote for Anthropologie" printed on the label. Customers can check the specific SKU numbers of the affected products on the CPSC website.

The candles were sold at Anthropologie stores nationwide and online from July to December 2021. About 19,380 candles are affected by the recall. Some 623 pieces were also sold in Canada. There have been no reports of incidents or injuries related to the issue from the region as of Jan. 21.

Customers who purchased candles from an Anthropologie store can return the items to get a full refund, while those who bought the candles online or received them as gifts should fill out a form on the Anthropologie website to get their money back.

Anthropologie has provided instructions on what to do with the candles if one is applying for the refund online. The steps include cutting the wicks in such a way that the candles can no longer be re-lit.

"Before cutting the wicks, please confirm that your candle is one of the products covered by this recall," the company stressed. "If you have questions about whether your product is covered by this recall, please email photos of your product to recall@urbn.com."
