  • Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez is positive Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 3 will happen
  • Gomez hopes the deal will be sealed by 2021
  • Canelo and Golovkin are now interested in fighting each other once more after their last match in 2018

Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez has revealed that they hope to make Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 3 finally happen by 2021.

Canelo and Golovkin have taken different paths since their last face-off, and both champs have been dismissive of talks about fighting each other again. But in a recent interview with Sky Sports, Golden Boy executive Gomez, who has been very supportive of the trilogy fight, said the Mexican is now "willing to entertain" the idea of a rematch in 2021, with the third fight likely going to take place at the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds.

"We have had some discussions about doing the third fight with Golovkin which would be very exciting. [Canelo] is willing to entertain that third fight," Gomez revealed.

Gomez said he is positive about making the fight happen. He even suggested that both Canelo and Golovkin may have already realized that a third fight would be good for their careers. The Golden Boy Promotions president hopes they can surprise everybody by closing the negotiations by next year.

"Hopefully we can surprise everybody by getting that fight going next year. They both realize now that their events were very successful. For them, monetarily, it would be very beneficial to fight again. More than anything, the fans are very interested. Both fights were very close and exciting. They both realize that now. They are both open to the fight," he continued.

The Canelo-Golovkin trilogy fight has become one of the most highly anticipated boxing matches today. The pair faced each other inside the ring after taking the 160-pound division by storm. They first met in 2017, with the fight ending with a controversial draw.

The rematch in 2018 generated even more buzz as Canelo managed to walk away with a win after a close 12-round battle. Since then, the two middleweight fighters have been urged by fans to engage in a third fight.

Golovkin’s team also confirmed that the interest is mutual at this point. The Kazakh’s longtime trainer, Jonathon Banks, even predicted that “GGG” would have an advantage in a higher weight class as he is naturally a big guy.

"Of course Gennadiy wants to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez again in the future. I think G would be happy to face him at 160 or 168 and I honestly believe that if the fight was at 168 it would be an advantage to G as he is naturally the bigger man," Banks said (via Boxing Scene).
