With Carmageddon quickly approaching on Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department has asked the likes of Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and Ashton Kutcher to spread the word about the closure of Interstate 405.

The whole idea is just to re-message the theme of avoiding the 405 area and that it's going to be a mess if people don't stay away, Lt. Andy Neiman, an LAPD spokesman, told the Los Angeles Times. The other message is to take advantage of this weekend to shop, meet some neighbors you never met before, finish that home improvement project you never got around to finishing or have a block party.

Lady Gaga is currently travelling and is yet to respond to the police.

But on June 30, Kutcher told his millions of followers that: LAPD askd me 2tweet: 405fwy btwn 10 & 101 will b closed July16-17. In xchange I would like a free pass on that stoplight tickt IT WAS YELLOW

Not to be outdone, Kutcher's wife Demi Moore, who has some 3.7 million followers made it known that to: Avoid frustration Twitter Peeps who live in the LA area, the 405 freeway will be closed July 16 & 17. Plan ahead. Weekend getaway perhaps?

Los Angeles' own doomsday on the 405 begins Friday evening and ends on Monday. For approximately 53 hours, Interstate 405, a 10-mile stretch connecting the center of Los Angeles to several large suburbs, will be shut down.

More than 200,000 cars use that highway each weekend, which could lead to massive delays. However, officials need to close off the area for construction of the planned $1 billion project to widen the highway and add additional carpool lanes. It is expected to be done in 2013.

Other celebrities doing their part to save Los Angeles from Carmageddon includes Tom Hanks, who took to his Twitter page to let residents know that in a disaster of this sort it would be best if LA residents buy local goods.

This weekend, LA! Avoid Carmageddon, Gas-zilla, 405-enstein, Grid-lock-apalooza! STAY HOME. Eat & shop local! Hanks wrote.

William Shatner also posted: LA friends have you heard about Carmegeddon? The 405 will close on July 16 & 17. Stay at home preparing for The Captains on 7/21 on Epix.

Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, who has been urging residents to stay away from the area, told the New York Times last week: If you think the 405 is gridlocked during the week, you haven't seen anything yet. My message is to stay home. Or go on vacation. Walk. Go on a bike. But do not get in your car and go anywhere near the West Side. It's going to be a mess.

And if they don't believe him, perhaps they will take it from Kardashian who tweeted: Make sure you stay away from the 405 Fwy the weekend of July 16 & 17, it will be closed between the 10 Fwy and 101 Fwy North & South!
