Once a year, people young and old from all over the country don spooky masks, glittery tiaras and superhero capes in celebration of Halloween. The holiday serves as an escape from reality, even for celebrities. Everyone from Kim Kardashian West to Beyonce has gotten in the spirit at some point, trading their signature styles for risqué, creative, or hilarious costumes.

Last year, Kardashain got downright spooky with a skeleton-inspired look, while Beyonce and her daughter Blue Ivy looked adorable as Janet and Michael Jackson. Other popular costumes worn by stars in 2014 included singer Rita Ora as Barbie, model Heidi Klum as a butterfly, models Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne as Mario and Luigi, singer Rihanna as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and model Kate Moss as fellow model Delevingne. Singer Katy Perry was hilarious as a giant Cheetoh last year, as was actor Gerard Butler as Captain America.

Group and couple costumes have also been a long-time favorite for celebrities. The Kardashian crew turned heads in 2012 with a playful group costume. Kim Kardashian West dressed up as Catwoman, Kanye West as Batman, Jonathan Cheban as the Joker, Kourtney Kardashian as Catgirl and Scott Disick as Robin. Last year, Tyga celebrated Oct. 31st as the creepy red-headed doll Chucky, while Kylie Jenner went as Chucky's bride.

Aside from spooky, sexy and silly costumes, celebrities often go for the shock factor on Halloween, aiming to turn heads and make headlines. Gossip blogger Perez Hilton dressed as Miley Cyrus in 2013 from her notorious VMA performance earlier that year, foam finger and all. That same year, Cyrus dressed as a scantily-clad Lil Kim.
