The U.S. Is Seeking To Expand Its Blockade On Iran Despite Growing Bipartisan Opposition To The Conflict
CENTCOM says it has created a 20-member task force to disrupt Iran's land and Caspian Sea supply routes. The new force will intensify Washington's economic pressure campaign and complement the maritime blockade of Iranian ports.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday the creation of a task force designed to restrict Iran's ability to transport weapons and other material across land-based routes and the Caspian Sea, a move which could significantly intensify Washington's pressure campaign against the Iranian economy and military.
"[CENTCOM Commander] Adm. Brad Cooper has directed the formation of Task Force Iron Gate, an internal staff of approximately 20 civilian and military personnel based in Tampa, Florida. The new CENTCOM team will coordinate with other U.S. government agencies on preventing the movement of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned materials, and illegal revenue streams across Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea," CENTCOM posted on X on Saturday.
Washington already maintains a naval blockade on Iranian ports, and CENTCOM claimed in its announcement that the blockade had "prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion in crude oil."
The blockade has indeed had significant success in restricting Iran's oil revenue. Bloomberg shipping data showed that Iran loaded no crude in September or October. The complete termination of oil loadings is unprecedented in the history of the Islamic Republic.
However, Reuters reported in late October that Tehran had been using a covert network of military agencies worldwide to import $2 billion worth of "hardware, explosives and heavy-duty trucks since January 2025. The clandestine network allowed Iran to circumvent Western sanctions and the U.S. blockade.
The Reuters investigation alleged that the matériel had entered the country via cargo ships on the Caspian Sea, trucks from Central Asia, and freight planes from China. Task Force Iron Gate would likely seek to target such routes, thereby expanding the scope of the maritime blockade.
"The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate reinforces the success of our ironclad blockade against Iran at sea," Cooper claimed.
Tehran has repeatedly listed the removal of the blockade as a key precondition for ending hostilities with the U.S. and opening the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil transit chokepoint.
The establishment of the new task force could dent hopes for an imminent resolution to hostilities between Washington and Tehran, which were boosted after a landslide Democrat victory in the midterm elections.
Many of the victorious Democrat candidates are opposed to the war, and voters named the financial fallout from the Iran War as a key reason for voting against the GOP, and even some Republican candidates, like Senate challengers Mike Rogers in Michigan and Ashley Hinson in Iowa, called for the war to end on the campaign trail.
Following the historic Republican losses, Vice President JD Vance was also quick to concede that "the reason we lost is the war."
President Donald Trump, who agreed that the war was a factor in the Republicans' loss, nevertheless said he did not regret the decision to initiate a military campaign against Iran in February and has ordered strikes on the Middle Eastern nation since Tuesday's vote.
