KEY POINTS

  • Chelsea is expected to target midfielders in the January transfer window
  • Bruno Guimaraes may not leave Newcastle if a new lucrative deal is given by the Magpies
  • Guimaraes could be a sensible addition the the Blues

Chelsea could use some added reinforcements at midfield, and the Blues are expected to take a look at who they can pluck before the January transfer window.

This early, there is one name that is reportedly being linked to the Blues–Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United.

However, successfully prying away the Brazilian midfielder will depend on how the Magpies handle the contract situation of Guimaraes.

Officially, the 24-year-old remains under contract with Newcastle until 2026.

Furthermore, the Magpies are allegedly bent on making sure that the Brazilian footballer remains at St. James Park by offering him a huge contract that will keep him there for a long time according to a report from Goal.

Guimaraes joined the Magpies only last January from Olympique Lyonnais.

Although he signed a deal to stay at St. James Park until 2026, Newcastle could tighten its grip on the Brazilian midfielder by offering him a weekly pay of £200,000 ($229,230).

Should this happen, Guimaraes would become the highest-paid player on the Magpies' end and also break their contract record.

Hence, reeling in the Brazilian from Newcastle United may not be easy for Chelsea.

They could expand their targets, especially now that it is a position that they have to invest in.

The Blues' woes were compounded following a setback in the recovery of N'Golo Kante, something that will keep the French footballer out for a significant period.

Aside from Kante, there is also the case of Jorginho.

There is a chance that the Italian footballer could leave Stamford Bridge once his contract expires at the end of the season.

Despite these manpower problems, Chelsea has managed to hold up the fort well as they are on a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

The Blues are hoping to sustain their winning run when they face Graham Potter's former team in Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League this coming Saturday, October 29.

Ironically, Chelsea was among the teams linked to Cristiano Ronaldo according to sources in a report by the Sun.

The Blues were interested in the Portuguese player in the summer, but former Blues manager Thomas Tuchel was against getting Ronaldo.

Instead, the Blues completed the signing of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang this past August.
