KEY POINTS

  • Son Heung-Min is reportedly considering to leave the club
  • Tottenham failed to secure their first major trophy in years last season
  • Son's desires to win something might be the deciding factor

Tottenham has been a major revelation during the English Premier League thanks to the combined efforts of strikers Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min, but the latter could leave the team in search of greener pastures.

In a report by German sports outlet SPORT1, Son is already considering a transfer from North London despite his contract expiring in 2025.

"Son is preparing for his next career step despite [his] contract [being active] until 2025. The [South Korean] national player... is now big enough for the big clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, FC Bayern Munich or Real Madrid," the report said after the translation.

Son has been a crucial part of the club's success this season, tallying 17 goals–six behind Premier League leader and teammate Kane's 23.

Despite Son struggling to find the back of the net in 11 of 12 Premier League games, it apparently is not enough to sway Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti from not pursuing him.

The Hotspurs are doing their best to keep them afloat with the South Korean soccer star in tow as his partnership with Kane has propelled them to the heights of domestic soccer, but a silverware has eluded them thus far.

At age 30, Son will be entering the tail end of his prime years and that drive to win at the highest level will be the determining factor of his decision.

Currently, Tottenham is in a prime position for a UEFA Champions League appearance next year if the season were to end today as they are holding strong to the No. 3 spot with 23 points–although they are closely being followed by the rejuvenated Newcastle United and Chelsea at 21 points and the sixth-ranked Manchester United with 20 points.

"In the coming months, Son will carefully consider how things will continue for him. He is now at a footballer age where he has to decide for himself whether the highest-quality class in world football should still appear on his CV," the report later mentioned.

Last season's Premier League Golden Boot winner last shining moment in the European soccer scene came in the 2018-19 season when Tottenham fell short of the goal when they lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the finals.

This season, his side is back in the big dance and has made it to the knockout phase–with anything short of a Champions League title being seen as a disappointment.

Son is fully aware that his time as a high-level contributor is nearing its end and he would love nothing more than to finally hoist a trophy, whether with Tottenham or elsewhere.
