Comedian and former "Saturday Night Live" star Chris Redd was taken to a hospital after he was attacked by an unidentified person outside a New York comedy club Wednesday night.

The 37-year-old actor was punched by the suspect at around 9.40 p.m. outside the Comedy Cellar club in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood, the New York Police Department told E! News. Redd was scheduled to perform at the club Wednesday night.

The suspect quickly fled the scene after the assault. Redd was transported to Bellevue hospital for treatment after sustaining a laceration to his face. The comedian was released from the hospital the same night.

Police are still searching for the suspect.

Witnesses said the assailant snatched off Redd's Greg Yuna chain but it fell down as the suspect fled the scene. Redd was able to recover the chain after the attack, TMZ reported, adding that the comedian suffered a deep cut on his nose.

TMZ also shared a video of the comedian getting first aid as police inspected the scene of the attack. Witnesses told the outlet that the suspect wore a security guard uniform.

Redd will perform at the City Winery on Sunday.

In September, Redd announced his exit from "Saturday Night Live" ahead of the show's 48th season premiere. He first joined the sketch comedy and variety show as a featured artist in 2017 and was promoted to a regular cast member in 2019.

When he announced his exit, Redd thanked "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels for "the experience of a lifetime."

"Five years ago, I walked into 30 Rock knowing that this was an amazing opportunity for growth. Now, with friends who have become family and memories I will cherish forever, I'm grateful to Lorne Michaels and to the entire SNL organization," he said in a statement to E! News at the time.

Redd was among the eight actors who left the show in what was considered the show's biggest cast turnover. Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor and Aristotle Athari also left the show earlier this year.
