Watford captain, Troy Deeney, has taken a subtle dig at Liverpool saying that 2020 is “going to be the year spoiled by the pandemic and not the year Liverpool won the league after 30 years”.

Liverpool, who are 25 points clear on the top of the Premier League table, are just two wins away from clinching their first league title in as long as 30 years. The Reds have 18 league titles under their belt, the last one coming in 1990 but ever since the Premier League came into the picture in 1992, they have not been crowned England’s league champions.

Premier League’s ongoing season has been suspended since March 13 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and a total of 92 games are yet to be played in the remainder of the campaign.

“I believe that when it comes to the integrity of this season anyway, it's already gone. I feel sorry for Liverpool because no matter how it plays out, they deserve to win the league. They deserve to get the trophy."

"But no matter how it plays out, even if we play all the games, it's still going to be the year spoiled by the pandemic. It's not going to be that year that Liverpool won the league being the best team and, you know, it's 30 years they haven't won for,” Deeney told CNN.

The 31-year-old striker, who has been associated with Watford since 2010, further added that the 2019-20 season has already lost its integrity and there is no “viable competition” at present.

“So, I do feel sorry for Liverpool and their players and Jordan [Henderson], but in terms of integrity, there's no way you could say that this is a viable competition. It's like running a marathon, 20 odd miles, stopping for two months and then sprinting the last bit and going: 'Ah, that was a good time,'” Deeney, who has made 358 appearances for Watford added.
