  • Manchester United officially announced the return of Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Ronaldo reveals that it was Sir Alex Ferguson who convinced him
  • His return to Old Trafford puts more pressure on the club to win the Premier League title

Manchester United had one of its best transfer window transaction in recent memory.

Bringing on Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund after a long-standing pursuit and signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid to upgrade their defense were seen as the club intensifying their pursuit of the English Premier League title.

Signing Cristiano Ronaldo away from Juventus puts pressure on the Red Devils to win the Premier League, almost an expected outcome with a world-class player like the Portuguese on the roster.

It was reported a few days before the August 31 summer transfer deadline that Manchester City and Ronaldo were a “done deal”.

However, a familiar figure to Manchester United fans and Ronaldo was able to sway him back towards the Old Trafford side.

Sir Alex Ferguson spent 26 years on the sidelines of Old Trafford and had amassed 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two UEFA Champions League titles.

Ronaldo was bought by Manchester United for a transfer fee of £12.24 million ($16.8 million) in August 2003, and his star would only rise from there.

In an exclusive interview with the club website, Ronaldo revealed that Ferguson was the main reason for his return.

“As everybody knows, since I signed for Manchester [United] at 18, Sir Alex Ferguson was the key. I remember when we played against Manchester when I was at Sporting Lisbon. For me, Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football for me,” said the 36-year-old Ronaldo.

“He helped me a lot, he taught me many things, and in my opinion, of course, he had a big role because of the relationship that we had, we keep in touch all the time, and he’s an unbelievable person. I really like him a lot and he was the main key for me to be in the position that I am, that I signed for Manchester United.”

Ronaldo does not reveal much more than this, but to Manchester United fans, it is everything that they need to hear.

In a report by ESPN, it was said that Ronaldo was up until 1 AM British Summer Time (BST) exchanging messages with former Manchester United teammates, including Rio Ferdinand.

The club’s leading goal-scorer Wayne Rooney also doubted the rumored move to their eternal rivals.

Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United caps one of the club’s most eventful transfer windows, and the rejuvenated club should be in a better position to contend for the Premier League title.
