When the Dallas Cowboys got off to a slow start in the 2018 NFL season, there was plenty of speculation that head coach Jason Garrett might be on his way out. That changed, however, in the second half of the year, and Garrett is expected to return to the team for the 2019 season.

Following a 3-5 start, Dallas won seven of their next eight games, as well as the NFC East title. The Cowboys beat the Seattle Seahawks in the wild-card round, winning their first postseason game in four years.

Former Cowboys’ wide receiver Terrell Owens made headlines over the weekend when he demanded that owner Jerry Jones make a coaching change. Dallas lost to the Los Angeles Rams 30-22 in the divisional playoffs, failing to reach the NFC Championship Game for the 23rd consecutive year.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on “Get Up” Monday morning that it would be an “upset” if Garrett were fired this offseason and there is no indication Jones will make a change. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported before Saturday’s playoff game that Dallas and Garrett would work on a contract extension this offseason.

Garrett was given the best odds to be the first coach fired in the regular season just a couple of months ago. That happened after the Cowboys lost in overtime to the Houston Texans in Week 5 and dropped to 2-3.

The Cowboys have actually been among the NFC’s most successful regular-season teams in the past few years. Dallas has put together three consecutive winning seasons, and they’ve finished above .500 in four of the last five years.

Garrett has gone 77-59 since taking over as the Cowboys’ head coach in the middle of the 2010 season. He’s gone 2-3 in the playoffs and led Dallas to just one losing record.
