KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool drew 1-1 against Crystal Palace on Monday
  • It was the Reds' second straight draw in the league this term
  • Nunez is set to miss Liverpool's next three games

Liverpool FC forward Darwin Nunez has apologized after getting a red card during the Reds' 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Nunez's first Premier League start turned out to be controversial after he was slammed with a red card for a headbutt on Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen in the second half at Anfield on Monday.

Since he received a straight red card for violent conduct, Nunez will miss Liverpool's next three games. Despite being down to 10 men against the Eagles at Anfield, Liverpool managed to pull off a draw, thanks to Luis Diaz's equalizer in the second half.

The Liverpool striker has taken to social media with a message to supporters about his red card. "I am aware of the ugly attitude I had. I'm here to learn from my mistakes and it won't happen again," Nunez wrote on Twitter.

The Uruguayan forward, who moved from Benfica to Liverpool at a club-record fee of $103 million, also gave an apology to Liverpool's supporters.

"Apologies to Liverpool all. I'll be back," tweeted Nunez.

The three games that Nunez is set to miss include Liverpool's big game against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday. The other two fixtures are home league games against Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insisted that Nunez was provoked by Andersen. He, however, admitted that the player made a mistake and he would speak with the Uruguayan forward.

"There was provocation but it was definitely the wrong reaction. He will learn from that. Of course, I will speak with him. I came in [after the game] and wanted to see the Wrong reaction in the situation. Andersen wanted that, he got it but he (Núñez) made a mistake. Of course, I will talk about it with Darwin but not yet," Klopp told reporters after the 1-1 draw.

Liverpool have managed to claim only two points from their opening two games of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign.
