Ryan Reynolds once again gave fans awaiting “Deadpool 2” a fun treat. After posting the first photo of Zazie Beetz as Domino last week, he revealed Josh Brolin’s first official photos as Cable on Monday. The “Avengers: Infinity War” star has some serious makeup for scars, a cybernetic arm and one of his eyes lights up. However, it’s the teddy bear that draws more attention.

In the first photo Reynolds posted, fans could only see Brolin’s face and hand. However, Reynolds came back with a second photo half an hour later that revealed most of Cable’s body. The character has some serious weaponry. But once viewers look past the crazy gun and tons of ammo, they’ll notice a worn teddy bear on his hip.

So why does this mercenary need to carry a toy? Well, it may hint that the movie could follow a certain storyline from the Marvel Comics. Cable cared for a mutant named Hope, a baby girl who is a messiah. She will one day save both mutants and humans, so naturally, a whole bunch of people want her dead. Cable protects her and travels through time to keep her safe, according to Marvel Database.

It isn’t clear if the movie will follow that storyline or a variation of it, but it would certainly explain the teddy bear. It also seemed like Reynolds confirmed that Cable would be traveling through time. “We all have that one, grumpy, heavily armed Uncle from the future,” Reynolds wrote alongside the headshot.

Cable, also known as Nathan Summers, has a pretty extensive history to draw from. As the son of Cyclops, much of his life was documented in the comics. He first appeared as a baby in a 1986 issue of “Uncanny X-Men” and took on the Cable persona in 1990. It isn’t clear which comic book storylines “Deadpool 2” will utilize, but the Hope Summers arc is a safe guess as is a certain romance. Cable and Domino were lovers in the comics, and since they’re both being introduced at the same time, it seems pretty likely that the movies would follow that route.

While Cable has a softer side, it looks like Brolin is playing up the character’s tough nature. “Now offering 25 percent off your next autopsy,” Brolin captioned a Cable photo on Instagram along with a little skull emoji.

Brolin and Reynolds aren’t the only ones excited. Comic book writer Fabian Nicieza was delighted to see how the movie interpreted Cable’s look. “No one on the planet has written Cable more than I have,” he tweeted. “This makes me happy for every single one of those words.”

“Deadpool 2” is currently filming in Vancouver. Director David Leitch is taking over for Tim Miller. T.J. Miller, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand and Stefan Kapičić are all reprising their roles from the original, which hit theaters in February 2016 and made over $780 million worldwide.

“Deadpool 2” is scheduled to hit theaters June 1, 2018.
