  • Satellite images show the impact of the missiles on the targeted facilities
  • The U.S. is preparing to impose sanctions on Iran due to the recent attack

Satellite images obtained by a San Francisco-based company reveal the aftermath of Iran’s recent missile attack on Iraqi bases hosting U.S. forces. The images clearly show the level of destruction the missile attack had on the facilities.

The images were captured by satellites known as SkySats that are operated by Planet Labs, a company in California dedicated to photographing Earth from space.

The images feature the al-Asad airbase and Erbil airport in Iraq, which were recently attacked by Iran on Jan. 7. The two facilities were targeted because they house American soldiers.

The attack orchestrated by Iran consisted of multiple missile strikes on the two facilities. As seen in the satellite images, several buildings in al-Asad airbase and Erbil airport have been reduced to rubble. Some areas also show traces of destruction caused by the bombardment.

During a press conference, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that no casualties were reported due to the incident. This is mainly due to the advance warning that Iraq had received regarding the attack, which was immediately passed on to U.S. forces in the country, Space.com reported.

Iran’s actions against the facilities in Iraq were made in response to the death of its high-ranking general Qasem Soleimani, who was killed by a U.S. drone strike authorized by Trump last week. According to Trump, the operation was carried out as a preemptive strike since intel reports indicated that Soleimani was planning attacks against the U.S.

In response to the recent retaliatory attack, Trump said the U.S. will impose sanctions on Iran. He also noted that the government is still looking into other options to deal with Iran’s actions. This includes urging allies of the U.S. to leave the nuclear deal with Iran in order to start negotiations for a new agreement.

“The United States will immediately impose additional punishing economic sanctions on the Iranian regime,” Trump said according to CNN.

“These powerful sanctions will remain until Iran changes its behavior," he added. "In recent months alone, Iran has seized ships in international waters, fired an unprovoked strike on Saudi Arabia and shot down two American drones.”
