A missing California hiker was found dead at the bottom of an 80-foot waterfall in the San Bernardino National Forest.

Robert Carey, 33, went for a hike at the San Gorgonio Peak over the weekend as “an experienced hiker.” After being reported missing, his body was found at the base of Big Falls Waterfall by the San Bernardino County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department on Saturday, according to a press release.

Rescuers recovered Carey’s remains on Sunday during daylight hours due to the area being dangerous at night.

“During the hours of darkness, a helicopter crew member was hoisted down to the base of falls to render Carey air. Tragically, rescuers determined Carey had succumbed to his injuries,” the press release said.

“Due to the danger and complexity of the recovery operation, emergency personnel postponed the recovery until daylight hours,” it added.

Bonnie Phillips, Carey's mother, told NBC News on Wednesday that he was headed to the peak and that he seemed determined to get there. The peak is at an elevation of about 11,500 feet.

When Carey did not show for a Saturday night dinner, Phillips said she “already knew there was something terribly wrong.”

"He sent me a text. He said, 'When you wake up, go out and look at the tallest mountain you see out there. And I'll be up there. Wish me luck.' He was adamant that he was going to make it to the top of that mountain. And he did,” Phillips said.
