Warner Bros Discovery, the parent organization of streaming services Discover+ and HBO Max, could combine the two and change its main name to "Max," according to sources familiar with the matter.

There has been no confirmation that a name change is considered. According to the sources, lawyers and executives are still clearing possible names. It is likely the streaming services will merge services and have a new name either way.

David Zaslav, the chief executive of Warner Bros Discovery, said spending was cut on HBO Max material recently as the new changes finalize.

WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. completed their merger in April.

"While we've got lots more work to do and some difficult decisions still ahead, we have total conviction in the opportunity before us," Zaslav said in an earnings call in November.

The moves come as HBO does not want to dilute its brand with its streaming service, according to the sources. HBO did come in strong with its content in the past year with 10 different movies that were released exclusively through HBO Max.

Streaming services encourage new episodes, series, and movies to be consistently released, which is a departure for some established outlets.

Warner Bros Discovery may focus on broader content and allow for a combined service to serve a larger customer base.

"The motion picture format absolutely matters, and it matters in a number of ways, it matters in theaters ...They also matter at home and, absolutely, in terms of the response that we've gotten not just from that title but from all of our days in day titles. We feel very good about the response that consumers have given it in the home," WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kila said in July 2021 when the new HBO Max movies were announced.
