An unidentified man in Manhattan, New York, was caught on camera assaulting a 51-year-old victim with a hatchet while the latter was trying to use an ATM inside a bank last weekend.

The man hit the unnamed victim in the head and thigh with the sharp weapon as the latter was in front of one of the ATMs inside a Chase Bank vestibule on Broadway near Beaver Street in the city's Financial District area shortly before 5:20 p.m., the New York Post reported, citing police sources.

Surveillance camera footage of the incident obtained by the outlet Tuesday showed the assailant walking inside the room, removing the hatchet from a dark bag, sneaking behind the victim and striking him in the back of his leg. The attacker then proceeded to slash the victim multiple times, while the latter attempted to defend himself.

The bloodied victim is pushed to the ground at one point during the assault and attempted to grab the attacker's weapon upon getting back on his feet, the footage showed. He was then able to flee before the hatchet-wielding man smashed the screens of the ATMs in the vestibule and walked away.

The assailant had left behind the weapon used in the attack and his backpack, according to police.

The wounded victim was reportedly hospitalized in stable condition.

Authorities hope the surveillance footage will help them track down the attacker, sources said.

The motive for the assault remains unknown.

A similar incident happened in late March when a former convict was caught on camera slashing a couple and their 1-year-old child in lower Manhattan.

Surveillance footage of the incident showed 30-year-old Darryl Jones holding an umbrella and walking past the unnamed couple pushing their baby in a stroller on State Street near Battery Park on the afternoon of March 31 before turning around and attacking the family with a blade.

Jones had slashed the 23-year-old father on the forehead and the 22-year-old mother on the lip, the video showed. The couple attempted to push Jones away from the stroller, but the assailant proceeded to stab the child and wounded her on the chin.

Jones then chased after the family when the group attempted to flee.

Police caught Jones following the incident, and the knife he used in the attack was recovered in a garbage can nearby.

The three victims, who were allegedly visiting from Belgium, were all treated by first responders for minor cuts.

Jones was charged with three counts of assault, assault on a person less than 7 years old, three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was on parole during the time of his arrest, having been released a month prior to the attack after serving several years for attempted murder and attempted assault.
