  • The Dogecoin Foundation is working on various projects to make the meme coin more accessible to users
  • One of these projects is RadioDoge
  • RadioDoge enables Dogecoin transactions to  go through even without the internet

Dogecoin, the world's first-ever dog-themed meme coin, has etched an indelible mark in the annals of cryptocurrency history by successfully sending the first DOGE transaction without the use of the internet, made possible because of RadioDoge.

The Dogecoin Foundation core development team announced that a Doge transaction was successfully sent 100 miles from its origin via radio transmission using a protocol called RadioDoge and with the aid of the Starlink satellite network. This development means that it is now possible to process transactions in remote areas, especially in locations where traditional internet infrastructure is limited, if not non-existent.

Dogecoin Foundation developer Michi Lumin on Friday shared the news on Twitter detailing the first transaction involved sending "4.2069 dogecoin" tokens to "100 miles" using RadioDoge and "just libdogecoin, radio, and ultimately relayed to the mainnet on the other end via Starlink." Libdogecoin is a C-based library of Dogecoin protocols that serve as building blocks for various DOGE projects.

The transaction was heard over 800 miles away, according to Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing. RadioDoge is the brainchild of the Dogecoin Foundation, which centers on utilizing low-cost radio technology (HF/LoRaWAN) with the help of Starlink satellite to offer affordable and wide-scale access to the dog-themed meme coin "for people outside the reach of the traditional internet infrastructure."

The team set up the Radio Doge Regional Hub, which served as a testing ground for this new-generation technology, a few days ago. The RadioDoge project along with LibDogecoin, "are exciting early steps toward realizing the goal of making Dogecoin an unstoppable financial vehicle, one which will empower financial freedom from power structures and provide a means of exchange for future generations."

It is worth noting, however, that Dogecoin is not the first cryptocurrency to send transactions via radio waves. Technological concepts like amateur radio equipment, mesh networking and portable antennas have allowed people to complete Bitcoin transactions even without internet access.

Dogecoin was trading down 4.92% at $0.1281, with a 24-hour volume of $16,991,032,651, as of 8:50 p.m. ET on Sunday, based on the data from COinMarketCap.
