KEY POINTS

  • Dominik Mysterio is delighted with his current run as a heel character
  • His involvement with the Judgment Day has pushed them to greater heights as well
  • Having Mysterio be the star of vignettes and storylines has helped generate interest in him

Dominik Mysterio has experienced a career resurgence since turning heel, and the young WWE star is enjoying his time in the limelight as part of the Judgment Day faction.

Mysterio recently spoke with former WCW star Konnan on his "Keepin' it 100 with Konnan" podcast and revealed that he is more than comfortable with being a heel rather than a face character on TV.

"I felt like I have more options and more variety to play with as a heel and stuff, and I did feel a lot more comfortable. Plus, when I was training before I debuted, when I would do matches, I would always be the bad guy," Mysterio said.

Mysterio, whose real name is Dominik Gutierrez, has been a net positive for those tuning into the weekly shows as his heel work with the Judgment Day stable has become must-watch TV due to their well-balanced presentation.

Making his heel turn at the Clash at the Castle pay-per-view in September 2022, WWE's creative team had to work overtime for Mysterio to get into the fans' good graces after his babyface run with his legendary father Rey had run its course.

Mainly serving as the comedy relief of the all-serious faction, Mysterio has been a feature talent alongside Rhea Ripley, especially in their ongoing feud with his father.

The highest peak that Mysterio's character has had with the faction thus far has been their out-of-the-ring vignettes that had him and Ripley bothering the family during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

While many would argue that it did little in showcasing Mysterio as a major threat inside the ring, it can also be argued that currying favor with the fans this way has helped turn fan opinion on Mysterio's character work on his side.

As a whole, the entire Judgment Day faction has become a consistent group that fans have grown to enjoy because of the chemistry that has formed between their youngest member and the industry vets he spends most of his screen time with.

In this regard, Mysterio is grateful that WWE's creative team is willing to listen to the four of them pitching how to better their segments.

"I feel like the writers put in a lot of effort and pitch us their ideas, and we roll with it. Whether it's Finn [Balor] or [Damian] Priest or Rhea [Ripley] that kind of have a different take on what's being presented to us, they'll talk to them, and they're very open to what changes that we may want to do or whatnot," Mysterio added.

Stepping out of his father's enormous shadow has been the biggest task for the writers since he is mainly known for being Rey Mysterio's son that was involved in a custody storyline with the late Eddie Guerrero back when he was just eight years old.

How WWE will handle his future is still up in the air, but the company knows they have a good thing going for them and continuing to run with it in this manner will only help him grow his star as he finds his own way in the industry.
