The Dow Jones industrials briefly turned positive in midday trading on Thursday, helped by gains in energy shares even as Goldman Sachs weighed on financial stocks.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 1.81 points, or 0.01 percent, at 12,269.18 after turning higher. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 2.07 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,312.34. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 10.81 points, or 0.39 percent, at 2,750.71.
