On Wednesday, rapper Kevin Gates was found guilty of battery after video footage showed him kicking a female fan during a concert in Lakeland, Florida, in 2015.

With a jury that included six women, the judge in the case sentenced the rapper to 180 days in jail with credit for any time served. The trial lasted one day. According to WFLA.com, in a previous hearing, Gates tried to have the charges dropped, admitting that he kicked the woman, Miranda Dixon, but only after she kept grabbing at his pants as he was performing.

Following the rapper’s sentence, his wife Dreka Gates took to Instagram to blast the woman and defend her husband. “You mean to tell me that @iamkevingates kicked the girl in the red jumpsuit and knocked the breath out of her? Because that’s what she’s been claiming and testified today in court,” she wrote.

According to Dreka, the woman “claims she fainted” but remained at the show. “She also touched him FIRST (more than once) without his consent but yet he was the one sentenced to jail today for the same crime.”

Gates’ wife also had a problem with the judge’s sentencing, saying that prosecutors originally wanted to give Gates 60 days in jail. “Are you f------ kidding me. Inshallah justice will be served… By the way, thanks for taking my husband away from our kids (sarcasm),” she continued.

While the woman’s friend, Termeral Redding, admitted to Dixon grabbing Gates, she said the entire front row was grabbing at the rapper. According to Redding, the second time Dixon grabbed Gates, he “ran and kicked her with force,” knocking Dixon back.

Joe Hailey, the head of security at the nightclub Gates was performing at, said there were around 20 security guards working at the club the night of the show and Gates had enough room on the stage to back up if he didn’t want to be touched.
