A drunk driver caused the death of an off-duty police officer after their car was involved in a multi-vehicular crash in Illinois over the weekend.

33-year-old Charles Schauer of the Berwyn Police Department was killed around 6:00 a.m. Sunday when the Dodge Durango that he was in collided with a 2008 Hino box truck that crashed with a pickup truck earlier, said FOX 32.

Schauer, a 10-year veteran of the Department was in the passenger seat and was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Dodge, 35-year-old Erin Zilka, was rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Zilka was charged with Driving Under the Influence, the outlet added.

Mayor Robert J. Lovero and the Berwyn Police Department shared and mourned the loss of Schauer in their Facebook posts, according to FOX News.

Three lanes of the Illinois highway were closed following the incident. It was reopened around 10:30 a.m. with state police leading the investigation, FOX News added, citing a statement from the Department.
