KEY POINTS

  • Ranni's Dark Moon is an enhanced version of Rennala's spell in Raya Lucaria
  • The spell can be found in Chelona's Rise in the Moonlight Altar
  • The Carian Regal Scepter and Snow Witch Hat boost the damage of this spell

As one of the legendary spells, Ranni’s Dark Moon serves as one of the best Sorcery spells players can use in “Elden Ring.”

The spell is found in Chelona’s Rise, a tower standing on the Moonlight Altar plateau in southwest Liurnia, near the Cathedral of Manus Celes and the Ringleader’s Evergaol.

To get to the Moonlight Altar, players must defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void past the Grand Cloister beneath the Deep Ainsel Well. Progress in Ranni’s questline is required before the portal to the Deep Ainsel Well in Renna’s Rise becomes available.

Upon entering the Moonlight Altar, tag the Site of Grace and follow the road that leads northwest to the Ringleader’s Evergaol. Then, go directly south while hugging the cliff edge. Keep going south, then follow the road that leads straight to the tower.

Like the other mage towers, Chelona’s Rise is relatively safe. There are no important NPCs here, so players are free to go straight up to the main study and open the chest that contains Ranni’s Dark Moon and a few Smithing Stones.

Though very similar to Rennala’s Full Moon, Ranni’s version offers an extra helping of Cold damage as well as the ability to inflict Frostbite. The spell not only deals more damage at base, but it is also extremely effective against targets that are weak to Cold, and Frostbite can increase the damage they take even further.

The damage of Ranni’s Full Moon can be increased by equipping the Snow Witch Hat, as it boosts the effectiveness of all Full Moon Sorceries. The Carian Regal Scepter also passively boosts the damage of this spell, but other staves might be more viable if players don’t plan on using Ranni’s Full Moon as their main DPS tool.

This spell requires 68 INT and two Memory Slots to use. It also uses 62 FP per cast.

Like Rennala’s Full Moon, this spell also draws in and negates all hostile sorceries that cross its path, making it great against other casters. However, Ranni’s Full Moon tends to deal more damage overall, especially against enemies that are weak against Cold.
