  • The Biden campaign assails the ad as full of "desperate smears" intended to distract from Trump's failures

Joe Biden has openly spoken about his stutter, a lifelong speech disorder that has plagued him since childhood.

President Donald Trump's campaign is planning to use Biden's stutter to question the latter's mental fitness. The Committee to Defend the President will soon air a 30 second-long campaign ad making fun of Biden's stutter. They wrongly claim this speech disorder is a sign of senility and cognitive decline.

The ad consists of out-of-context video clips of Biden stuttering on the campaign trail and during interviews. It will run online and on cable and broadcast networks in Arizona.

Trump won Arizona's 11 electoral votes with a narrow 3.6% popular vote win over Hillary Clinton in 2016. Arizona then -- and now -- is a battleground state. Trump must win Arizona in November to hold on to the presidency.

The Committee to Defend the President has spent $400,000 to produce the ad, which asks, “Does Joe Biden have the mental capacity to keep America safe? Is Joe Biden making any sense? Does Joe Biden have dementia? In a world losing its mind, we don’t need a president who has already lost his.”

Trump, his campaign and the GOP wrongly claim Biden’s stuttering means he's not all there. On the other hand, Biden’s defenders have accused Trump and his ilk of mocking the former vice president's stutter.

Biden's spokesman Michael Gwin slams the ad as full of "desperate smears" intended to distract from Trump's failures. Gwin pointed out Trump knows "he can't run on a record that's resulted in a divided country and left 120,000 Americans dead and 20 million unemployed as the greatest public health emergency in a century goes unchecked."

Gwin blasted Trump as "someone who echoed the spin of the Chinese government as the coronavirus spread instead of listening to warnings from Vice President Biden and our experts, and someone who's ordering testing to be slowed down even as cases continue to spike in Arizona and nationally."

Established in 2013 as a "Stop Hillary" political action committee, the Committee to Defend the President is now dedicated to Trump and his agenda. It’s fighting for Trump's re-election in 2020.

It has got financial muscle and is one of the two largest non-party spenders during the 2020 election cycle. It also invested millions of dollars into paid Trump ads and grassroots activities in battleground states like Arizona.
