A report has revealed that Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk may also become Twitter's CEO once his purchase of the social media platform is complete.

Musk has yet to confirm the news of his reported promotion, which is said to be a temporary move and would last months. Twitter has also yet to comment on the reports from CNBC's David Faber, which cite sources familiar with the matter.

Current CEO Parag Agrawal took over for Twitter founder Jack Dorsey in November. Since the announcement, employees of the social media platform have complained about a potential shake-up in leadership.

Agrawal told employees at a meeting in April, "we don’t know which direction the platform will go" once the sale is complete.

Musk has publicly expressed his desires for the direction of the platform.

Musk said that the social media platform "has too many engineers not doing enough." He also wants to make the company a "magnet for talent."

Within the last week, Musk also said the platform needs more engagement. The platform's latest earnings report revealed that the platform has 229 million daily active users, a 15.9% increase from last year.

On Tuesday, Musk tweeted that companies and government should be required to pay for the platform, but that he would not ask daily active users to pay.

He also expressed a desire for Twitter's algorithm to be more transparent and to make it clear how the company promotes or demotes tweets.

A Securities and Exchange Commission filing Thursday confirmed that Musk secured $7.1 billion in equity commitments from handpicked investors and friends for his purchase of the social media company. Musk's total purchase offer was $44 billion.

Twitter's stock was up $1.60, or 3.26%, as of 12:42 p.m. ET on Thursday.
