KEY POINTS

  • The trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the best players in tennis
  • Several rising stars have shown the promise to win but always fall short against tennis' Big Three
  •  Stars such as Alexander Zverev must make major adjustments to their training in order to overcome Federer, Nadal and Djokovic

The legacy of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will always be remembered as the most dominant players of tennis. Rising stars such as Alexander Zverev have to overcome the Big Three with certain adjustments to their training regimen.

It’s intimidating to see how far Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have come in their careers in the sport. The sport has been ruled by the three for years and nobody has even won a Grand Slam other than them in four years. The last time a player outside the trio won a major was in 2016 when Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka won Wimbledon and the US Open respectively.

There’s no point in questioning the greatness of the three as the numbers back it up. The 20 Grand Slam trophies of Federer is a record in the men’s division. This is followed by Nadal’s 19 and Djokovic is nearby with 17.

While there are tons of talent in the tour, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have proven themselves as the benchmark of success. For young star Zverev, he has to make major changes in order to get over the hump.

This is what Zverev’s former coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, shared on what the 23-year-old has to do. By way of Tennis World USA, Ferrero emphasized the discipline of a well-maintained diet and proper training.

"In order to overcome Federer, Nadal or Djokovic, Zverev and the rest of the guys who come after them must improve off the court: from food to fitness,” Ferrero said.

“I trained Zverev for eight months and I noticed that. He used to go back and forth a lot in the same match and that's why I think he couldn't win a grand slam yet. That irregularity leads him to play the fifth set heads or tails," Ferrero added.

The current standings have Zverev in the top ten rankings, as the German star is seventh in the world. The talent to succeed is definitely present in Zverev and it will have to take a lot more sacrifices to further elevate his game more.

While the famed tennis trio is still piling up championships, stars like Zverev must patiently wait and train for their time to come as a Grand Slam winner.
