UPDATE: 2.10 a.m. EDT - The brush fire was contained in the northeast corner of Gilbert Street and Castlewood drive. Officials said no homes were at risk, however, the evacuation order was still in place.

"Residents who left their homes on foot may now return to their homes. All roads, however, will remain closed to vehicular traffic as Firefighters work to make sure all fires are out," the Fullerton Police Department public information officer said.

A new 20-acre brush fire broke out in Fullerton, California, on Wednesday night, prompting emergency evacuations and street closure.

According to local reports, firefighters responded to the scene near Gilbert Street and Castlewood Drive around 7 p.m. local time (10 p.m. EDT), hours after they put out another fire near the Brea Dam. The fire grew to 20 acres within the next two hours, prompting evacuations.

“Homes in the immediate area are being evacuated. If you need to be evacuated, you will be contacted by officers. Gilbert closed from Rosecrans to Imperial,” the Fullerton Police Department's public information officer tweeted.

Fullerton Fire Department spokeswoman Kathy Schaefer said, “Our biggest area of concern is Castlewood Drive and Gilbert Street. We’re trying to box the fire in there.”

She, however, added that despite the emergency evacuations, “No homes are currently threatened. We have plenty of air support and a lot of units at the scene.”

Meanwhile, an evacuation center was opened for the displaced at the Fullerton Community Center, 340 W. Commonwealth Ave.
