Long-time Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi was captured at dawn Thursday and wounded in both legs, an official of the nation's National Transitional Council said.

NTC official Abdel Majid confirmed that the hunt for the self-styled King of Kings who ruled Libya for 41 years came as NTC finally captured Sirte, the last major holdout of Gaddafi supporters and the former dictator's hometown.

He's captured. He's wounded in both legs ... He's been taken away by ambulance, the senior NTC military official told Reuters. Majid said Gaddafi was captured near Sirte as he tried to flee in a convoy that NATO warplanes attacked, Majid said.

The head of Gaddafi's armed forces Abu Bakr Younus Jabr had been killed during the capture of the Libyan ex-leader, the agency said.
