When national holidays like Veterans Day roll around, “General Hospital” is typically preempted, but this year, viewers will get a special treat from the cast and crew of the ABC soap opera.

On Monday, Nov. 11, “General Hospital” will air a special “What If…?” episode dedicated to exploring the idea of what would have happened if Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) never turned to a life of crime.

Benard made his “GH” debut on Aug. 13, 1993, and 25 years later, the daytime series is celebrating his lengthy career with a special tribute to the fierce mobster.

Once Benard was introduced as Sonny, a nightclub owner and racketeer, his character quickly became entwined in various storylines while also rising in the criminal ranks. Eventually, he committed enough crimes to form his own organization and became the ultimate mob boss.

Thanks to Benard’s role on the ABC soap opera, the actor has won a Daytime Emmy, four Soap Opera Digest Awards and received four ALMA Award nominations. Meanwhile, Sonny has become one of the most feared yet respected characters in Port Charles.

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Sonny had a tough life that he was desperate to escape from. After he was abandoned by his dad at a young age, he faced years of abuse at the hands of his stepfather.

Sonny’s mother eventually convinced him that he would be better off if he left, so the teen grabbed his belongings and fled from the only home he ever knew. Being on the streets wasn’t easy, but Sonny managed to catch a break when local crime boss Joe Scully taught him how to survive.

When “What If…?” premieres, fans will see get to see the return of “GH” cast member Dominic Zamprogna, who will reprise his role as Sonny’s son Dante. Meanwhile, Benard’s 13-year-old son, Joshua, will play a young version of his father’s iconic character.

When viewers tune into “General Hospital” on Monday, they will take a trip into Sonny’s mind, where he will imagine how his life would have turned out if he never joined the mob as a teenager.
