A Georgia man has been charged with the murder of his wife after initially saying she died by suicide.

Troy Newton Scarborough was charged Friday with felony murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felon in relation to his wife’s death. Scarborough's wife, Shyanne Schroeder, was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head when Jones County Police responded to the call on March 27.

"The responding deputies got the feeling that something wasn’t right about this case, and thankfully they trusted their instincts," Sheriff Butch Reece said in a statement.

Scarborough was arrested at the time of Schroeder’s death for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. While Scarborough was in custody, police reviewed evidence of Schroeder's death.

“Scarborough has remained in custody since his arrest, while investigators have been busy reviewing all the evidence in relation to Schroeder’s death. After leaving no stone unturned, it has been determined Scarborough caused Schroeder’s death,” Reece said.

Reece commended the work and intuition of the county’s investigators and deputies. He said that without it “there may have been a huge miscarriage of justice.”

Scarborough will remain in custody at this time and is being held without bond, Reece said.
