  • Naya Rivera is feared to have drowned in Lake Piru, California

  • The search for the actress will continue Thursday

"Glee" actress Naya Rivera is feared to have drowned after she was reported missing following a boat trip with her 4-year-old son in Lake Piru in Ventura County, California on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old had rented a pontoon boat on Wednesday afternoon for an outing with her son, Josey Hollis Dorsey. However, a few hours later, at around 4.48 pm, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department received a report of the 4-year-old being found alone floating on the boat, said spokesperson Captain Eric Buschow, as per Mirror.

Authorities found Rivera's life vest on the boat and her son Josey was found asleep on it. They believe she went into the lake to go swimming and is now "presumed drowned."

Sources told TMZ that Josey had said his mom "jumped into the water but didn't come back up." The child has been handed over to his other family members.

Divers and helicopters searched the reservoir until darkness fell but they received no trace of Rivera. The Ventura County Sheriff's Twitter handle was updated with the information that the search and rescue mission was suspended for the evening and will resume "at first light" on Thursday morning.

"The missing person at Lake Puru has been identified as Naya Rivera, 33, of Los Angeles. SAR operation will continue at first light," reads the tweet posted by officials.

"We're going on the belief that she did go in the water, and we've not been able to locate her," Buschow told the media. "This may well be a case of drowning."

"This is a big reservoir, it's deep, these kinds of things happen. We don't know all the circumstances. Investigators are working on that, getting as much information as possible," he continued.

Rivera is best known for her role of a high school cheerleader named Santana Lopez in Fox's "Glee" from 2009 to 2015. Her portrayal of the character fetched her several accolades and nominations. The actress was also seen in "Devious Maids" and horror film "At the Devil's Door." She went on to publish her memoir "Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up" in 2016.

Her last Instagram post was a picture of her with her son, where she is planting a kiss on Josey's face.

"Just the two of us," she captioned the picture.

Rivera shares custody of her son with ex-husband Ryan Dorsey, whom she divorced in 2018.

If Rivera is indeed dead, then this is the latest tragedy to strike the cast of "Glee."

In 2013, the show’s lead actor Cory Monteith was found dead in a Canadian hotel room. His cause of death was “mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol.”

Mark Salling, another actor who gained popularity through the musical drama, committed suicide in 2018 by hanging from a tree. He was accused of possession of child pornography.

Rivera and Salling were romantically linked back in 2009, and she admitted in 2015 that she wasn’t "totally shocked" when she found out about the actor's arrest for possessing child abuse images.
