Netflix struggled to keep up with demand for the first extended gameplay preview of "Grand Theft Auto VI," offering an early indication of the enormous commercial interest surrounding what analysts expect could become one of the biggest entertainment launches in history.

The highly anticipated preview debuted Thursday, August 27, with the streaming platform getting the first opportunity to show an extended look at the game. Some Netflix users encountered error messages and were forced to refresh the platform as the preview went live.

"Some members briefly experienced an issue accessing Netflix, but we quickly recovered," the company told CNBC. Twitch, where gamers and creators were livestreaming their reactions to the footage, also experienced bandwidth problems around the release, according to Wells Fargo analysts cited by the outlet. The firm said initial player reaction to the gameplay footage appeared "largely positive."

Christopher Dring, editor-in-chief and co-founder of The Game Business, argued that Netflix's involvement itself demonstrated how far "Grand Theft Auto" has expanded beyond the traditional gaming industry.

"I've never seen Netflix do anything where they put a game on display, and it just shows the power of this particular title, it's in a league of its own," Dring told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe." The numbers behind the game are already supporting that enthusiasm. Analytics company Newzoo estimates "GTA 6" generated roughly $180 million in digital preorders during its first week across the U.S. and Europe's five largest gaming markets.

Extrapolated globally, that represents approximately $260 million in first-week preorder spending. Newzoo estimates the game could generate about $4.5 billion in cumulative sales by the end of launch week under its "proven sequel" model, although its broader range runs from roughly $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion.

That potential is amplified by the extraordinary longevity of its predecessor. "Grand Theft Auto V," originally released in 2013, remains one of gaming's most durable commercial properties. Dring noted that the title continues to rank among the industry's bestselling games more than a decade after its debut.

Rockstar confirmed that Thursday's extended preview was captured entirely from in-game footage running on PlayStation 5. "GTA 6," centered on protagonists Jason and Lucia in the fictional state of Leonida and a modern version of Vice City, is officially scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

There are still risks surrounding the blockbuster launch. Wells Fargo analysts cautioned that the successful preview only modestly increased their unit-sales expectations and said Take-Two may need positive developments around the next version of "GTA Online" to support a more sustained valuation increase. Another delay or sales falling short of enormous expectations could pressure the stock.

Rockstar's decision not to include a physical disc has also generated criticism among some players. The company is selling a physical code-in-box version, but the package contains a download code rather than a game disc.

Beginning August 18, a leaker using the name Cyberleek released gameplay clips and images, including material purporting to show the game's map, ahead of Rockstar's carefully planned Netflix reveal.

Rockstar described the leaks as "heartbreaking" and warned that spoilers could affect the experience it intended for players, while Take-Two pursued legal action seeking information that could identify the source. Cyberleek has portrayed the campaign as a protest against industry practices, including Rockstar's decision to not sell a physical edition of the game.

The move reflects a gaming business that has rapidly shifted toward digital distribution. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said during the company's August 7 earnings call that its business was already more than 90% digitally distributed. Take-Two also reiterated its expectation for fiscal 2027 net bookings of $8 billion to $8.2 billion, citing excitement around the November launch.
