The United States pledged $47 million in humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, the Associated Press reported Monday. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been forced to leave their homes as fighting between Hamas and Israel moved into its third week.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was expected to talk about the aid with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a meeting late Monday in Cairo, the AP said.

Nearly a third of the money, $15 million, was to go to assist the U.N. refugee mission in Gaza, a State Department analysis of the aid released Monday indicated.

Kerry arrived in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, for talks to work out a cease-fire between Israel and the militant group Hamas, which controls Gaza.
