After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released their statement about their plans to step back from their senior royal roles without warning Queen Elizabeth, rumors began to circulate that the couple’s relationship with the monarch had soured.

Despite the speculation, a royal commentator revealed Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry’s relationship began to fall apart in 2018 when the Duke of Sussex was planning his royal wedding with Meghan.

In Vanity Fair, Katie Nicholl claimed that the Queen’s refusal to approve the couple’s wedding demands caused a rift in their relationship.

“[The Queen] was very upset by some of Harry’s demands, and the way he went about certain things,” an insider allegedly told Nicholl.

“He didn’t want to use the Queen’s staff for the wedding, he and Meghan brought in their own florist and cake makers, and Harry apparently asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to marry them before consulting the Queen and the Dean of Windsor, which wasn’t the correct way to do things.”

At one point during the preparations, Prince Harry reportedly ordered the staff to cater to Meghan’s demands after an employee told the “Suits” star that the tiara she wanted to wear for the wedding was unavailable.

However, Harry’s reaction didn’t sit well with Queen Elizabeth, and she confronted her grandson. “The Queen was said to be so cross that she called Harry in for a rare dressing down,” Nicholl explained.

A royal insider claimed the conversation caused a strain on Elizabeth’s and Harry’s relationship. “I think she was dismayed by his attitude in general, and I remember speaking to her, and her being rather upset by how beastly Harry was being. Their relationship was quite badly damaged by it all,” the source said.

After Prince Harry and Meghan announced their plan to split their time between the UK and North America, Queen Elizabeth was reportedly left feeling hurt and “let down” by her grandson.

Meghan and Prince Harry are expected to officially step down from their roles as senior royals in spring 2020.
