“Avengers: Endgame” is breaking all the records. The film has already earned $1.209 billion worldwide.

The movie, the 22nd in Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe, earned $350 million domestically and $859 internationally. It is the biggest opening weekend ever, smashing records set by last year’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”

The previous “Avengers” film held records for biggest worldwide opening with $640.5 million and biggest domestic opening weekend with $257.6 million. “Infinity War” had also been the fastest film to hit the $1 billion mark after 11 days. “Endgame” took that record in less than half the time at just five days. (While it opened on April 26 in the U.S., the film opened in some international markets as early as April 24.)

“Endgame” will likely continue to break records. It’s expected to hit the $2 billion mark, just like “Avengers: Infinity War.” The real question is how far beyond that can it go? “Infinity War” is the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation) with $2.048 billion, and “Endgame” seems likely to surpass that. Could it dethrone “Avatar” ($2.788 billion) as the highest-grossing movie of all time?

“Avengers: Endgame” was highly anticipated. The film has been marketed as a culmination of all 22 MCU movies so far, but the Disney-owned studio actually kept most plot details under wraps. While fans knew it would deal with the aftermath of “Avengers: Infinity War,” which killed off loads of superheroes, the filmmakers refused to talk about plot details.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo asked fans to refrain from sharing spoilers with hashtags like #ThanosDemandsYourSilence and #DontSpoilTheEndgame. Fans began using browser extensions to block any news about the film. The fear of spoilers ruining the movie likely made many moviegoers decide to see it opening weekend rather than wait for crowds to thin out.

“Avengers: Endgame” stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Brolin, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Don Cheadle, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper and Danai Gurira.
