Is HTC Corp. reinventing the periscope? It may seem so with its new photography gadget called Re, but the GoPro competitor does a lot more than allowing for a stealth view.

The small, curved device is actually a camera with a 16-megapixel lens that shoots video in 1080p resolution. It features a wide-angle lens, image stabilization and can capture slow-motion video and time lapse video. In addition to being waterproof, it is compatible with most accessory mounts.

For what can Re be used? “[Re] allows you to capture pictures and video without getting in the way of anyone’s enjoyment, including your own,” HTC America President Jason Mackenzie said, in a statement.

Re is designed for ease of use and has few buttons. Holding the device turns it on and it is powered through sensors. Re works with a mobile app, which allows users to manage the device from their smartphones. The Re app will be available for the Android and iOS platforms, meaning that Re also works with iPhones. Re will also receive updates over time to keep in step with the latest hardware and software.

HTC says Re will also have a live broadcasting function in the future; the company has partnered with YouTube on this feature.

Re will be available in time for the holidays on ReCamera.com, HTC’s online store and at various carriers and retailers including Best Buy, Amazon, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
