A man and his wife took their own lives last week by jumping with their two children into a river in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh — an incident which police said was caused by family disputes.

The bodies of 38-year-old Kanchi Satish and their 2-year-old daughter, Bindu Sri Durga, were found by police in the river Godavari late Sunday, The Times of India reported.

Police had launched a search operation after finding an abandoned bike, clothes and flip-flops on West Godavari District's Chinchinada bridge, according to the outlet.

Satish, his 28-year-old wife Sandhya, the couple's daughter Bindu and 4-year-old son Jaswin had gone missing Friday, with their families lodging a complaint the next day after being unable to find them, Palacole rural police sub-inspector K. Srinivas said.

Authorities suspected that the family jumped into the river on the day they disappeared, as per The Times of India. A suicide note found by police alleged that the family had been cheated by unnamed individuals.

Police suspended the search operation late Sunday, and it was scheduled to resume Monday morning with the hopes of tracking the other missing family members, according to the report.

Prior to their disappearance, Satish had called his wife and children to his relatives' house at Velivala on Thursday, the report said. The family stayed there until the next day before leaving and saying they were headed to the city of Guntur.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.

A similar incident occurred in India's Uttar Pradesh state nearly three months ago when a 40-year-old woman and her four children allegedly jumped into a river over a domestic dispute.

The woman, identified by Kydganj police as Rohini, jumped from Naini bridge into the Yamuna River on May 11. Rohini's three daughters Rupali, Sherya and Manali and son Ansh — aged between 8 and 20 — also jumped off the bridge.

Authorities had been notified of the incident when a passerby spotted the family jumping into the Yamuna and raised an alarm. Boatmen and swimmers present on the banks during the incident jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue all five family members.

The woman and her children were taken to a hospital for treatment. One of the family members was said to have been in serious condition.

According to authorities, the cause of the incident was allegedly a domestic dispute.
