  • Thomas scored 42 points in his G League debut Wednesday

Veteran point guard Isaiah Thomas is getting another shot at the NBA.

The 32-year-old player signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Lakers Friday, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported.

Thomas will be paid $151,821 for the 10-day deal, with a salary cap set at $95,930, Hoops Rumors reported. But the overall cost of signing him is expected to be higher for the Lakers due to the increase in their tax bill.

Thomas signed via the NBA’s hardship provision, which allows a team to exceed the 15-player maximum when it has at least four players who are sick or injured for longer than two weeks.

Trevor Ariza and Kendrick Nunn are injured, while the Lakers lost Dwight Howard, Malik Monk and Talen Horton-Tucker to health and safety protocols. Lakers guards Russell Westbrook and Avery Bradley also entered health and safety protocols Thursday, according to Charania.

Thomas’ recent performance in the G League likely convinced the Lakers to give him another shot. In his debut for the Grand Rapids Gold Wednesday, he put up 42 points, eight assists and six rebounds in 42 minutes.

Thomas’ net worth has increased throughout the years since his basketball career started in 2011. The athlete, who has played for several teams including Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics, currently has an estimated net worth of $16 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

At the peak of his career in 2017, Thomas, then playing for the Boston Celtics, sustained a hip injury during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals.

The injury, which cut short his playoffs and forced him to undergo eight months of rehabilitation, derailed his career trajectory and reportedly cost him $100 million.

Since then, Thomas has played for several teams under temporary contracts. During the 2017-18 NBA season, the point guard played 17 games for the Lakers. In the 2019-20 season, he played 40 games for the Washington Wizards.

He last played in the NBA during the 2020-21 season, when the New Orleans Pelicans signed him to a 10-day contract.

With the aim of returning to the NBA, Thomas competed with Team USA in the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers in November. He signed a G League contract and joined the Grand Rapids Gold, Denver’s affiliate, Monday.

Thomas earlier told the Associated Press that his "ultimate goal" was to play on an NBA court.
