  • Jake Paul reiterated that he's already worthy of fighting Saul "Canelo" Alvarez
  • Paul made a bold claim about him and Alvarez
  • The Mexican superstar commented on a potential fight with the YouTuber-turned-pro boxer

Jake Paul appears to be serious about taking his game to another level.

Prior to securing the biggest win of his soaring pro boxing career, Paul was already brimming with confidence. The YouTube star believes that he’s among the best in the sport and that he’ll soon get a crack at Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Experience-wise, Paul is way behind Alvarez. However, the former is convinced that he’s already better than the Mexican boxing superstar. In fact, Paul claimed that boxing skills are the only aspect where Alvarez has an advantage over him at this point.

“Other people think [I am not ready to fight Alvarez],” Paul recently said on ESPN’s “First Take.” “People try to place limits on what is possible for you. You are a unicorn doing something different. For me, I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I know I can get after Canelo, I know I can go rounds with him and the guy he fought the other time, the Turkish warrior [Avni Yildirim], quit after three rounds and he didn't throw one punch.”

“I’m bigger than Canelo, I’m faster than Canelo, I’m more athletic than Canelo,” he continued. “Can I box better? Probably not, but after three years, that’s going to be a big fight. Two of the biggest names in boxing going after each other.”

Before his knockout win over former UFC champion Tyron Woodley, Paul had stressed that he can lure Alvarez soon by “continuing to be the pay-per-view star” he already is. However, this is not how his coach BJ Flores sees it.

According to Flores, an Alvarez vs. Paul fight is still a pipe dream. He also said that he’s “not going to say” that Paul is ready for the multi-division champion because it’s just not true.

"I think anybody when they first come into a sport, they want to go after the best guys you know, [but] to say he's ready for Canelo right now, I'm not going to say that,” Flores told MMA Fighting of Paul in August 2021.

“Come on,” he continued. “Like, Canelo is the pound-for-pound number one fighter. I mean it's a lot of work to get there. I mean, let's keep it real.”

Alvarez echoed Flores’ take on the subject. For the undisputed champion, Paul is not in that realm yet and a fight isn’t happening anytime soon.

“Not right now,” Alvarez told TMZ Sports of a possible fight with Paul in September last year. “He’s not ready. He needs to keep improving. Good luck [to him].”
