A 50-year-old unemployed alcoholic in the Indian state of Gujarat hacked his elderly mother to death because the victim refused to give him money for booze, according to authorities.

Pravinsinh Rana was drunk when he killed his 70-year-old mother, Madhu, using an ax at their farmhouse in the village of Dharampur Wednesday, the Times of India reported, citing police.

Moments before the murder, Rana had demanded money from the victim, according to the outlet.

Rana, who is a jobless alcoholic, according to Chiloda police inspector Anderson Asari, then used an ax to hit Madhu on the forehead after she refused to fulfill the demand.

A villager identified as Nitinsinh Rana heard the commotion and saw Madhu lying in a pool of blood, according to a first information report he submitted to Chiloda police.

Pravinsinh repeatedly told his mother "not [to] do any drama and get up, or be prepared to get beaten again," Nitinsinh claimed.

Nitinsinh later called emergency services, and a doctor declared Madhu dead.

It was unclear if Pravinsinh has been arrested or charged over the incident.

His relationship with Nitinsinh was not disclosed in the Times of India report.

In a similar story from more than a year ago, a drunk man in India's Madhya Pradesh state allegedly killed his friend over a dispute regarding who would pay for their alcohol.

Radheshyam Mehar fatally hacked his 32-year-old friend Golu Ahirwar with an ax after the two had an argument at a country liquor store.

Mehar, who lived in the village of Sindhora like Ahirwar, was allegedly drunk when he hit his friend twice with the weapon.

The attack left Ahirwar with severe injuries on his head and neck, causing him to die on the spot.

In another incident from March, a local political leader in the Indian state of Karnataka killed her allegedly abusive husband with the help of her daughter.

Shobha Amargol, the president of Dharwad's rural Bharatiya Janata Party women's anti-government movement, conspired with her unnamed daughter to murder her husband, Erappa Amargol.

Erappa was an alcoholic who regularly quarreled with his wife and daughter, police said.

Unable to tolerate the harassment any longer, Shobha decided to kill Erappa, according to authorities.

Initially, Shobha claimed that Erappa had died in an accident. However, doctors suspected foul play after looking at his injuries and contacted police.

Shobha later admitted to the crime. A murder case was registered in connection to the incident, and both Shobha and her daughter were arrested.
